April 13-Jordan Haines, Oakland Center controller

You know what goes on in the cockpit, but what about the person on the other side of the radio? Join Oakland Center Controller and CFII Jordan Haines to learn about the different types of air traffic control facilities, tips for flying VFR and IFR around the Bay Area, controller pet peeves during radio communications, and what goes on behind-the-scenes at ATC facilities when the controller isn’t on the radio.

Jordan Haines is a Certified Flight Instructor based at OAK. After becoming an 18 year old private pilot at exactly 40 hours, he spent the next five years in San Diego attending college at UCSD and working for the San Diego Padres. Once he moved to the Bay Area and started working for the Oakland A’s, Jordan realized his dream and finally took a chance on a career in aviation. He earned his instrument rating, commercial certificate, and CFI certificate in just nine months and started instructing full-time at OAK with hopes of joining the airlines. Miraculously, he was picked up by the FAA as an air traffic controller in 2016 and, after four months of training at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, earned a job back home at Oakland Center. Jordan now controls traffic full-time for the FAA but still instructs part-time, passing on his ATC tips and tricks to his students!
